This Voyage Is Taking Too Long! Changes to the Eviction Process in Massachusetts

During the Great Shut-Down, the Massachusetts Housing Court adopted emergency protocols changing the procedure followed by the Court to manage its case load. These procedures, including the adoption of a multi-tier hearing process, has now been put in place on a more permanent basis and all indications are that it is here to stay.
Because of this, and because of several important changes to statutes affecting this process, the pace of the ship of eviction has slowed considerably, going from a “quick, inexpensive” process to a slower, more complex procedure, with a lot of rocky shoals and sandbars to catch the unwary.
It is important for owners and management staff to understand those key changes as well as some changes to procedures in the Courts, to keep up with the shifting tides of the law.
